Fort Fisher Kure Beach, North Carolina

Located about 20 miles south of Wilmington, North Carolina, this gigantic fortress, approximately 1/3 mile wide by 1 mile long, was made almost entirely of sand with a few masonry revetments here and there on the seafront. Boasting elevated gun chambers 20 to 40 feet above the natural lay of the land, and huge sand traverses between the gun positions, the fort was the largest ever to occupy space on the North or South American Continents. It was called the `Gibraltar of the South`.
