This photo is the one which most clearly shows the actual color of the metal which is semi-gloss black. You can also see the rich glow of six coats of a hand-rubbed antique oil finish. The original appears to have a clear finish, not paint like the field carriages. You can see the wood grain very clearly. It was probably some type of brushed on linseed oil coating.
