Seacoast Artillery Photo Gallery Eccentric Axle Bushing Detail Inside the cheeks of the upper carriage lies two sets of the assembly that you are looking at. The bronze ring is the eccentric axle bushing. It has two small, square-head, bolt stops on it. The pin sticking out of a hole through the axle impinges on the upper bolt stop when the eccentric is thrown into gear completely, as it is here. Note the position of the axle wrench handle to the left. The part of the axle which goes through the upper carriage wheel is now past the bottom dead center position which prevents the eccentric from sudden disengagement.
