The Land Face at Ft. Fisher

Still impressive today, Mike stands in front of the anti-infantry stockade fence which, during the battles, stretched all the way across the penninsula from the Cape Fear River to the Atlantic Ocean. The sally port was approximately in front of where he is standing. A sally port 12 pounder battery of two guns was served after the Federal infantry attacked. Many holes were blown in the fence by naval shell-fire, but enough of it survived to be a substantial obstacle to infantry.
