    Fort Moultrie Seacoast Barbette Mount

The pintle-pin and associated hardware is in view here. The pintle-plate, with four large through bolts, washers and nuts has a lot to do with the strength of the mount. Other hardware items important to strength, are the pedestal deck bolts and the pedestal hold-down ring which bind the entire pedestal together and connect it with the radial timbers of the seacoast mount and deck. The pintle-pin can be subjected to tremendous shear forces if the counterhurters are used to retard the upper carriage during recoil. This transfers a large portion of that recoil energy to the chassis which is connected to the pintle pin via a stout pintle-bracket.
