Seacoast Artillery Photo Gallery Structural Steel U-Channel is Holed On the left is an
incomplete penetration by our standard 7 oz. 12L14 mild steel target bolt. The charge was 400 grains and the velocity was approx. 1225 FPS. On the right the entire projectile passed through the plate. We tried a hardened steel, (D-2), core (pictured) held in a cylindrical recess within our standard mild steel bolt for the second shot at 1225 FPS. Similarly constructed bolts were in common usage by both sides during the Civil War. Our test plate was completely holed by the entire projectile after the hardened steel core punched out a half inch diameter plug of structural steel thereby weakening the impacted area.
