Seacoast Artillery Photo Gallery Lots of Energy Wasted in Changing the Shape of Bolt Components These two were found in the dirt at the bottom edge of the target plate. The mild steel (12L14) carrier portion was `banana-peeled` as the photo dramatically shows. The 3 oz. hardened core of alloy steel (0-1)was noticeably deformed, going from a cylinder to a toadstool shape, thereby wasting more energy. This proves, among other things that you can not properly harden a large section, 3/4 inch, piece of alloy steel with a propane torch or even two of them! Unbelievably, the soft steel of the bolt body with its extra thick skirt expanded partially into the rifling for a DISTANCE OF A FULL INCH !!
