    Bullet Skirt/Rifling Engagement Test

About 10 inches of prarie clay were penetrated by the 6 oz. bolts from our first successful rifled tube. We also determined that the milled base skirt had flaired out into the rifling as there were four equally spaced score marks from the four groove experimental barrel on the improved, .020 thick, skirt. We were so anxious to see if the first barrel ever rifled by us would actually spin the bullet, that we opted for (ONLY 4 GROOVES)for this EXPERIMENTAL barrel. It worked just fine and actually was able to produce five shot groups of less than four inches at 100 yards. Two load development shooting sessions were necessary to achieve these gratifying results.
