    Fort Clinch-Ferandina Beach, FL

Rodman barbette guns from one of the large bastions. Where is the Scarp? Is this just a pile of sod covered sand? This fort and Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island, Alabama shared a unique design, that of a detached scarp or outside wall of the fort. Just out of sight on the right is the Carnot Wall, a substantial brick structure with numerous rifle slits. Behind this wall where the riflemen stand is a continuous path called the chemin de ronde which continues under the bastions via brickwork passageways. Beyond the Carnot Wall is the ditch, dry or wet.
