Field Drawings are part of Field Research

When studying a seacoast gun like this 100 Pdr. Parrott Rifle in Denver, Colorado`s, City Park, we are usually trying to verify the correlation of the gun dimensions to the specifications of the original drawing. Most of the gun`s details such as the surface finish, the markings, the form of rifling, vent and cascable details, and the original tool marks if any were not specified on any engineering drawing of the period. Field study is an indispensible component of necessary historical research which must be thoroughly accomplished before one curl of metal can be turned on the lathe or one chip cut on the milling machine.
